7. West Virginia
Projected record – 6-6
Neal Brown is noticed by most as a coach on the rise. It won’t be long before he has West Virginia back near the top of the Big 12. However, 2020 isn’t that year.
The Mountaineers still have a QB battle to sort out that features two good, not great quarterbacks. They also have to find a way to get Leddie Brown some room to run. West Virginia was one of the worst rushing teams in the entire country last season. Sam James and TJ Simmons should be a strong duo at receiver to help either Austin Kendall or Jarret Doege.
The defense has Darius Stills back after thinking of heading to the NFL. He will be joined by his brother, Dante Stills on the defensive line. That should make the line one of the better units in the Big 12. The secondary will also have some playmakers in the secondary. Sean Mahone and Tykee Smith should help prove that the defense is still the strength of this team.
West Virginia only averaged 20 PPG in 2019. If the Big 12 2020 season is going to go better, the offense needs to start clicking. Neal Brown was able to take a big jump in his second year at Troy. It just looks like WVU may be one year away.
