West Virginia 2020 Season Preview: Year Of The QB

Defensive preview

The defense for West Virginia was actually solid overall. While allowing 28 PPG isn’t great, they have a ton of potential. Most of that potential comes from the Stills brothers up front.

Darius Stills considered heading to the NFL but decided to return for one more season. Not only is he the best defensive player for WVU, but he could also be the best in the conference. While the Stills brothers are a major part, West Virginia also returns seven of their top 10 tacklers.

Dylan Tonkery and Josh Chandler bring some experience and playmaking ability to the linebacker position. The defensive backs are also poised for a big year. Multiple players look to step up including 2019 leading tackler, Sean Mahome. Tykee Smith and Kerry Martin should be ready to become a bigger part of the defense as well. On top of all that, Arizona transfer Scottie Young joins the group. Young was third in tackles for Arizona.

The biggest question surrounding this unit now is the future of DC, Vic Koenning. Rising sophomore safety, Kerry Martin made allegations against Koenning that resulted in him being placed on administrative leave. While Martin has made further comments and Koenning has released his statement, no decision on his future has been made at this time.
