Is Justin Fields the most Important Buckeye?

#1 Ohio State trounced the Maryland Terrapins 73-14 and improved to 9-0 this weekend. Both Justin Fields and JK Dobbins had dominating first half performances and were pulled out of the game at halftime.

Justin Fields 2019 Season

Fields has lived up to all of the expectations that come with being the star quarterback at Ohio State. He has completed 68% of his passes for 1859 yards, 27 touchdowns and just one interception. He has been smart in the running game onlybeing an aggressive runner in games where they really need it. Running the ball, Fields has attempted 81 times picking up 347 yards which is good for an average of 4.3 a carry.

Justin Fields 2019 Season

The play from Fields that stood out to me the most this season came in the Maryland game. It was a touchdown run up the middle by Fields, but he seemed to pull the ball from J.K. Dobbins on a designed run because he read a blitz coming. Fields IQ is probably the most impressive thing to this point in the season.

J.K Dobbins 2019 Season

Dobbins has rushed for over 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons with the scarlet and gray. He is averaging 7.2 yards per carry which matches his average yards per carry from freshman year. He his filled stat sheets in first halves of games and gotten to sit for many second halves. Despite that, he sits at 1200 total yards.

Who do the Buckeyes need more?

Both Fields and Dobbins have been dominant for the Buckeye offense this season, but the Buckeyes need Fields more to be successful. The running back spot is a position of depth for the team. Master Teague is averaging 6.7 yards per carry as the second running back from the team.

Obviously you wouldn’t want to lose either guy, but if it did happen the running back position is one the Buckeyes would feel much more comfortable with because of the depth. Teague is an aggressive back who has filled his role for the team perfectly and is someone who is ready to handle a full-time load if necessary.
