Don’t Give West Virginia QB Job To Kendall Just Yet

Camp is underway, we are moving ever closer to the start of football and the West Virginia QB battle is underway. Going into the season, it looked like a lock for Austin Kendall.

Kendall was a top 10 QB in his class and recruited by Neal Brown. He chose Oklahoma but after a transfer to West Virginia he is finally with Neal Brown. Kendall is now considered the favorite to land the starting job. Even more impressive is the +2800 to win the Heisman. The fans are high on him and so is Vegas, but don’t give him the job just yet.

Trey Lowe and the West Virginia QB Battle

Lowe has been making major strides to gain ground on the other two. He also has received praise of his growth from Neal Brown.

Lowe may be behind, but he fits the system well, has a big arm and is the most athletic. That plays right into the offense that Neal Brown ran at Troy last season.

Last Year the Troy Trojans had 131 carries from their two main quarterbacks. They accounted for 452 yards and 4 touchdowns. They also accounted for one catch that went for 11 yards. For a comparison, Tua Tagovailoa had 52 carries last season.

Lowe was only ranked as the 610th best recruit in the country and a three star QB according to 247Sports. But Lowe is also a multi-sport athlete and has a 4.7 forty time. Going back to Troy stats from last season shows that the Trojans ran the ball 471 times and had 371 pass attempts.

In modern college football, 100 more carries over pass attempts isn’t the norm. This is why you can’t write the West Virginia QB battle off. West Virginia returns two talented running backs and will have a solid offensive line. But they are a bit more questionable at the receiver position after graduation two starters and losing another. TJ Simmons returns and George Campbell transferred in but there is still question marks.

Lowe is also a Sophomore, he is going to need some time to develop and grow. Austin Kendall spent a few years with Lincoln Riley and sat behind two Heisman winners, he deserves the benefit being the assumed starter. But we can’t just hand this over to him. Neal Brown has shown he likes to run the ball and Lowe is the perfect guy for that. Kendall could be the starter come James Madison, he more than likely will be, but don’t count the young QB out.
