D’Eriq King surprised the country when he decided to redshirt himself and sit out after just four games at Houston in 2019. After an electric 2018 that featured 50 total touchdowns, it was a move never really seen before. Now King is a Hurricane and he is garnering high praise once again.
2020 Heisman Odds
The early Heisman odds have been released and King is currently sitting at fourth (+1400) He is being put in the same company as Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence and Spencer Rattler.
King has talent around him, however the question remains if the group can stay consistent all season. King also needs to stay healthy and take advantage of a weak conference.
Rhett Lashlee is also a great fit for what King needs to thrive. Opening up the offense to give King running lanes will keep the defense on their toes. It also will open up more opportunities for the skill players around him.
The biggest concern has to be what happened in 2019. While Holgorsen isn’t Lincoln Riley, his offense has had plenty of success and he comes from the school of Mike Leach/Mike Gundy. Holgorsen has had his fair share of success and the Air Raid is an incredibly QB friendly offense. While King isn’t totally to blame, it still raises some questions.
The saving grace is how productive D’Eriq King was in four games. He was able to rack up 12 total touchdowns and almost 1,000 total yards. If he can translate his production to the P5 level, not only could a Heisman be headed to Miami, a NY6 bowl could be on the horizon.
