Notre Dame has been pulling in some solid recruiting classes over the last few cycles. While they have had plenty of talent, it was missing those elite playmakers. However that has all changed quickly over the last two classes because of Lance Taylor.
Taylor was brought in from Stanford to be the running backs coach. With players like Bryce Love and Christian McCaffrey on his resume as well as NFL experience, it was an easy decision.
Since he has arrived at Notre Dame, he has already greatly improved the running back talent. Chris Tyree spent most of his Senior year flirting with getting a fifth star and is one of the fastest recruits in the country. Tyree finished ranked as a four star on 247 Sports but was still a top 100 overall player.
Tyree gives Notre Dame that elite athleticism they have been missing, but the list is about to get even better. Will Shipley is a is a current five star RB in the 2021 class out of North Carolina. The 17th overall player hasn’t made any announcements but he is thought to have a heavy Notre Dame lean. Nothing can be set in stone until after signing day and he is on campus, but even the 247 Crystal Ball has Shipley headed to Notre Dame.
Lance Taylor is the coach to thank if Notre Dame lands more elite talent at RB.
Taylor has already made multiple visits to Shipley and has been putting the work in to build a strong relationship with the high school star.
“He knows a lot about where I’m from,” Shipley said. “That connection plays a huge role. It makes you feel more comfortable talking to someone, knowing that they know where you come from and what it’s like”…“My relationship with coach Taylor is a great relationship. I love speaking to him. The thing I love about it is it’s never only about football. That really goes out to who he is as a person and just how great our relationship really is.”Via NDInsider
Taylor has had help from a talented staff but he is helping Notre Dame take that next step to a playoff berth.
Just to put this in comparison, Lance Taylor is landing players Notre Dame doesn’t usually get. Chris Tyree is the highest rated running back to commit to Notre Dame since Greg Bryant. Will Shipley would become the best back Notre Dame has signed in the last two decades.
This all pairs well with and always strong offensive line and a list of impressive surrounding talent. Notre Dame also has five star Michael Mayer and top 50 overall WR, Jordan Johnson. After years of being lackluster, Notre Dame has serious offensive firepower.
An entire starting offensive line returns as well as some young but talented receivers. Ian Book is back for his third season and the cupboard is far from bare for Tommy Rees and Lance Taylor.
Taylor may be the best kept secret. He has the history of developing some of the best running backs in recent memory and is going head-to-head against top schools. While he doesn’t get mentioned along side the best recruiters in the country, he is bringing in elite talent in a very short time.
