This JUCO Transfer Could Replace Justin Shorter

JUCO Potential

The JUCO ranks can be home to very talented athletes. Often times these athletes come from either small schools where they receive little recognition or they had to overcome academic difficulties following High School. The most famous JUCO transfer in recent memory would have to be Cam Newton, Newtonled Blinn College to the NJCAA National Championship a year before guiding Auburn to an NCAA National Championship.

With the loss of former 5-star WR Justin Shorter, Penn State has a void to fill. While most CFB programs overlook the JUCO Ranks, Franklin has left no stone unturned and may have found a high-caliber transfer to replace Shorter.

The Transfer

It doesn’t hurt that one of the best JUCO teams in the nation resides in the state of Pennsylvania. This year Lackawanna College in Scranton, PA stormed through the season to a perfect 10-0 mark. This past spring, two of their players committed to Penn State for the 2020 season following their participation  in the Elite Camp held at State College. One of these committs is WR Norval Black.

WR Norval Black

In Thursday’s National Championship game Norval Balck had a disappointing final game for Lackawanna to the tune of 2/18/0. Lackawanna suffered their first loss of the season to fellow undefeated Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 24-13. Despite the disappointing finish Black offers nice upside for the Nittany Lions going forward.

Despite the lackluster finale Black was one of the best WR prospects in the JUCO ranks in 2019. He entered the season ranked within the top 10 of most of the major college rankings. During his final season in Scranton the kid from Germantown, MD managed to thrown down a 20/552/7 stat line. As you can tell from his 27.6 ypc Black is the kind of explosive player teams love to have at their disposal.

Despite his narrow frame the 6’1 playmaker has shown a penchant for making contested catches along the boundary. He has displayed good hands and is smooth in and out of his breaks which is a must for players with his type of slender build. His JUCO Freshman highlight video below shows just what type of skills he brings to the table.

At Happy Valley

Black’s arrival could potentially help ease the loss of former 5-star recruit Justin Shorter.  The talented WR decided to enter the transfer portal late in the season before even playing in the team’s Bowl Game. Next year Penn State will be bringing back an extremely talented group highlighted by Sean Clifford, Journey Brown, Noah Cain, Pat Freiermuth, KJ Hamler, and others.

Perhaps Black is just the type of explosive player to solidify a championship run for the Nittany Lions. Keep an eye out for how he meshes with the team beginning this spring. I know that I will be watching.
