College football is finally here; the PAC-12 conference will be exciting this season. Oregon, Washington, and Utah are the possible favorites to win the conference this season. But there is a team i think could surprise everyone, the California Golden Bears.
We all know about the California Golden Bears defense, they have one of the best secondaries in the county if not the best. Coached by Gerald Alexander, Cal had 21 interceptions last season. California only gave up 175 passing yards per game last season. Corners Camryn Bynum, Elijah Hicks, and safeties Ashtyn Davis and Jaylinn Hawkins led the way.
If California is to be successful, it will come down to there offense. The defense will do what it does, but the offense needs to step up and do better than they did last year. Last season Cal turned the ball over way too much, kept putting the defense in bad situations. Cal also had trouble finishing drives for touchdowns.
Chase Gerbers will need to take care of the ball this season and make some plays down the field. Hopefully, Gerbers can mature as a quarterback to help lead this Bears team. One of the Strengths of the Bears team is the offensive line, they return a few key pieces upfront. Cal should lean on the run game with Christopher Brown and their defense to win games this season. But Gerbers will have to make plays for them to have a surprising season.
California Bears play UC Davis in week one of the college football season, they should win that game. But in week two, Cal will have it’s first test. The Bears head up to Washington to take on the number 13 rank Huskies. It will be a game i will watch closely to see how Cal can compete against a good opponent on the road.
