The Sooners opened up Spring practice last Saturday and outside LB Jalen Redmond was back almost “full go” according to OUInsider.com
For those of you that don’t remember Redmond missed all but 3 games last season due to blood clot issues. Redmond played against TCU, Kansas State, and Texas Tech. In those three games Redmond notched 6 tackles with 2.5 for a loss. He had a hell of a day against Kansas State with 5 tackles, before coaches pulled him due to his blood clot issues. Sure 3 games is a small sample size but it’s hard to ignore those stats, especially when he was playing with a condition. So with the help of Alex Grinch I can definitely see the 6′ 3″ 264lbs LB make a difference in 2019.
To be clear, Jalen Redmond is not ready to go 100% but he’s getting there. Lincoln Riley had this to say about his progress after the first Fall practice; “Yeah, he’s moving around well.. You know, we’re kind of slowly building him up a little bit, not throwing him into everything right now. So he didn’t go through the entire practice, but mentally he seems to be in a really good spot and has really, I think, got a good feel of what we’re doing schematically, is taking advantage of that time”.
I’m optimistic for both Jalen’s health and potential this season. Lincoln Riley also commented on his physical presence, stating; “He’s in the best shape that he’s been in since he’s been here. He’s really lost a lot of body fat, really done a good job with his body”. That sounds like Redmond will make a great addition to Grinch’s Speed Defense.
I wish the best for Jalen Redmond and can’t wait to see him play. Boomer Sooner.
