Does Christmas Need Enforcers? Krampus and Gritty

In much of Central Europe, being nice or naughty is not only something that must be done for St. Nick…. You have to worry about Krampus. Let’s google Krampus real quick and give you a rundown.

In Central European folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure described as “half-goat, half-demon”, who, during the Christmas season, punishes children who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved with gifts. Krampus is one of the companions of Saint Nicholas in several regions including Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Northern Italy including South Tyrol and the Province of Trento, Slovakia, and Slovenia.[ The origin of the figure is unclear; some folklorists and anthropologists have postulated it as having pre-Christian origins.

Okay, So Krampus is an absolutely fucked tradition meant to keep children in central Europe from misbehaving…. This brings us to the most prolific NHL mascot to ever grace the ice.

If we look at The Flyers Roster, they currently have a Radko Gudas, Michal Neuvirth, and Jakub Voracek, who are all from The Czech Republic, and Michael Raffl from Austria.

Makes u think, Where did the Flyers Organization pull their inspiration for Gritty? I’m not saying that Gritty is a half demon who beats children with tree branches because they were bad, but he has gotten into it with some kids before… He’s served justice to small children. He looks absolutely EVIL. He lives in Philadelphia, which is the closest thing to Hell that I can imagine.

Is Gritty Krampus? Is Krampus Gritty? Are they related? Is it good that Christmas has an enforcer?

Happy Holidays.
