It was the talk in the off season but after week one i have heard it carry over for fans into the season. not only had Notre Dame lost two All-Americans in Quenton Nelson and Mike McGlinchey, but also position coach Harry Hiestand. Hiestand is considered one of the best offensive line coaches in college football and is off with the Chicago Bears now.
Clearly losing all of that is going to be a setback for any team. While the O-line will not be as dominant as last season, they will be just fine. Michigan has possibly three first round draft picks with Devin Bush, Rashan Gary and Chase Winovich. The Irish most likely won’t face a defensive line that talented again this year. On top of that talent they were faced with, Michigan had seven months to prepare for this game. Brian Kelly said in a post game interview about those challenges. “I was really pleased, They handled a lot of junk up front, a lot of things we had not seen before. That’s what happens in an opener, you have all seven months to come up with stuff. (Michigan’s) Don Brown is a good defensive coordinator. They brought a lot of stuff we hadn’t seen. Those guys had to sort stuff out. They did a really good job.”
This is a veteran offensive line and will only continue to grow and improve. There isn’t any need to worry and Dexter Williams will only improve the rushing stats that makes everyone look good. With an easy next few weeks this offense could really hit it’s stride.
